Afghanistan tapestries and the origins of Paisley

Posted by Jeremy Mason McGraw on 29 Sep 2013

I shot a section of Smith Treuer’s Afghan tapestry collection this weekend. The story of the fabric trade in the middle east and how it came to be Paisley is an interesting tale of great fashion trends in history. Like a visual game of telephone hundreds of years ago this middle eastern design made slowly it’s way into the trends of European fashion, changing with each generation until it no longer represented it’s origins. Smith’s collection spans several hundred years and documents part of the evolution of the craft. Each one of these images shows a tapestry, hundreds of years old, completely hand sewn by groups of people with more patience than I. These are a few of my favorite designs. There are often amazing stories in unexpected places.
